The Madurai bench of the Madras high court on Friday upheld the appointment of T K Rajendran as Tamil Nadu director general of police. Madurai-based trade unionist K Kathiresan had filed a plea seeking to quash the appointment of Rajendran as the DGP and order a CBI probe into his alleged involvement in a gutka scam. The court said the state government was right in its decision on appointing Rajendran as the DGP. The court said the entries made in the records seized by the income tax department in connection with the gutka scam were not sufficient to deny appointment to him. The case did not warrant transfer of inquiry to the CBI, a division bench of justices KK Sasidharan and GR Swaminathan held. The court directed the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), which is probing the scam, to constitute a special team to conduct inquiries.. . .
